Berry Fine Wine

Yesterday, I joined the latest Tasty Tour, organized by Jodi, of Tasty Touring, one of my

Wine & Cheese Tasting at Flat Creek Estate

favorite local Austin food blogs. Tasty Tours take Austinites out to explore the tasty eats and drinks Austin and the surrounding areas have to offer.  So, we hopped in Jen’s Honda, and headed out to Lago Vista and Marble Falls in the Texas Hill Country to Flat Creek Estate Vineyard & Winery  and the Sweet Berry Farm.

We signed up for a local wine and cheese tasting for $15/person, sat in the tasting room, and learned about each wine as we tried them, pairing them with suggested local cheeses. I had been to Flat Creek Estate once before, but didn’t get the complete tour of all tasting rooms and the production equipment like we did yesterday.  And, I didn’t mind the repeat visit, especially since they make one of my favorite all-time and award winning wines, the Super Texan (75% Sangiovese grapes, 25% cabernet savignon/merlot).  As I mentioned in a previous wine post, there are only a few wines that I remember, and this is one of them.  It won the Double Gold at the San Francisco International Wine Competition in 2005 and was the champion at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo International in 2007 (according to the Flat Creek Estate website).

On to the berry farm…we stayed on the winding roads and made it to the strawberry patch (strawberries are in season

to pick in March-May, but Sweet Berry Farm also has blackberries and pumpkins available for picking at different times of the year).  We had a fabulous time out in the fields and came back with boxes full of mini strawberries, and fresh strawberry and pumpkin ice cream made from the farm’s very own produce.

Great blog and photos and I’m so jealous of all you can do on WordPress. I may need to think about transferring mine over also. We are now working on recipe ideas for what to do with all those pounds of berries…strawberry rhubarb pie, strawberry shortcake, strawberry muffins, strawberry lemon bars, etc. Thank god for freezers!
