Keep Austin…Local!

According to Dictionary.com, “weird” is an adjective that means “fantastic” or “bizzare”.  I would say, then, that the local phrase “Keep Austin Weird,” which implies that Austin is weird (fantastic AND bizarre), and suggests that its inhabitants keep it that way, is spot on.  And, according to Wikipedia, “this slogan was adopted by the Austin Independent Business Alliance to promote small businesses in Austin, Texas”.  What’s my point? Well, the point is that independent or local businesses are inherently at the root of Austin’s fantasticness…and, we should keep it that way!  After all, if you stop and think about your favorite Austin restaurants, bars, and cafes, it is probable that very few of them are chains or franchises found in other cities as well.

This is where the GoLocal Austin Card comes into play! The GoLocal Austin card is only….drumroll…$10, for approximately a 12-month period of time (from the time of purchase), for unlimited use for discounts at local businesses in the ATX.  The purpose is to help support local businesses, and reduce the strain on the environment by eliminating paper coupons, and reducing or eliminating vehicle travel time when you start to eat and shop somewhere nearby regardless of your niche in the Austin community.  (I will put this under my Green Entertaining category).  Also, mark your calendars…Saturday, May 16th will be declared GoLocal Austin Day by Mayor Will Wynn.  Support local businesses on May 16th to give back to the Austin community.

Rebeccammended Way to Support Local Businesses and Save on Local Entertainment/Gift Idea: GoLocal Austin card, $10, available at most local businesses.  Check here for the listing of participating businesses you can support and save! Click here to find out where to get one!

After seeing the list, I’m definitely sold! The free large (non-alcoholic) beverage at Alamo Drafthouse might be the best deal for my spending habits, and I know that free tea/soda at Zocalo and Galaxy Cafe will be great as well!

Is there any limit to use? For example, can I get a free drink at Alamo every time I go?

Also, the site says that Will Wynn declared May 16th “Go local Austin” day. Do you know if there are any special deals at local businesses that day or is it just a commemorative day to promote local spending?
