Back to the Basics

October 13th, 2009  |  Published in Out on the Town

blue and white umbrella with night lightsSince the 17th of October will be the TheRebeccammendations’ six-month birthday, I thought I would address what it’s all about. If you’re a new reader, the purpose of TheRebeccammendations is: to provide an online written resource where readers can gather information about entertaining, or essentially, anything fun.

Entertaining others can be about showing them a good time, whether at home with a themed-dinner party or serving homemade creative desserts, or being the host as you show your guests the highlights of the city you live in. It’s about music, art, shopping, events, conversation-starter centerpieces and home decor, going out to eat, or meeting up for a drink. It’s about finding something to do with downtime–making your own fun. And, it’s about being with others and making memories.

But, what happens when you’re looking for something fun to do, and you just can’t think of anything?! You’re drawing a blank on a fun restaurant, or you know of one, but at the last minute, you know there will be a wait. You miraculously have a free weekend coming up, and are not sure how to spend it. Or, your family is surprising you with a visit, and all of a sudden, you’re expected to have an itinerary planned out. No pressure. There shouldn’t be! You shouldn’t have to stress about dinner reservations!

That’s one of the ways TheRebeccammendations can help! Besides writing about entertaining, one of my promises to you, my readers, is to help you with entertaining ideas! Recently, I created a Facebook fan page to be able to communicate and connect better with my readers. One such loyal supporter left me an inquiry for a “Rebeccammendation” for the best Chinese food in Austin. In another instance, I was asked for romantic lunch and dinner “Rebeccammendations”. I’ve also been asked what my favorite salsa is in Austin (I have three—stay tuned to find this in a future post).

While I don’t claim to be an entertainment expert, or a food critic, I try to gather as much information as possible about the happenings around town. I like to try new things and visit new places, and if I don’t have an answer, I’ll either be on a mission to find one myself, or reach out to my fellow entertainment gurus. (This is a group effort, and I have my sources too!)

So, in an effort to bring back the basics of TheRebeccammendations, feel free to pose your question about entertaining as a comment to this post or whenever entertaining duty calls by emailing me at Rebeccammendations@gmail.com. I will do my best to give you ideas to help bring some fun to your life!

*Note: I will be traveling later this week, so my next post may not appear until next week. But, don’t worry, I will be responding to Rebeccammendations requests while I’m on the road!
