aHead of the Food game

This post is so delayed, it’s not even funny. I have no excuses, except possibly the fact that every time I eat the sandwich above , or one of its brothers or sisters on the menu, I gobble it up so fast, I forget to take pictures and I’m too busy raving about my lunch that I overlook the written word.  When I discovered Food Heads, one of my favorite Austin lunch spots (in addition to here and here and I can’t wait to try lunch here), TheRebeccammendations didn’t exist. So, I have an excuse for not writing about that first visit. But, for the other dozen(s) of times I have lunched here, I apologize for not sharing my sandwich indulgences with you.

I’m pretty sure the picture above of my Salmon Salad Sandwich, with wild salmon, olive oil, apples, red onions, cilantro, and my substitution of dijon vinaigrette served on olive oil-dusted toasted multigrain bread is convincing enough. Or, perhaps my friend Jason’s “bread and butter” Caesar Sandwich has the same effect. (Jason, thank you for letting me photo-invade your meal).

Maybe the only things missing are photographs of the quaint and quirky atmosphere of the sandwich house on 34th Street, just West of Guadalupe, complete with fresh cut flowers on every wooden table, a handwritten chalkboard menu, and a delightful dining porch. And, the fact that you can put….ahem… sweet potatoes on your sandwich? Oh, and blackberry balsamic vinaigrette? And, that basically you can combine any of the many menu items between two slices of fresh and hearty bread laced with grains and seeds and…okay, I’ll stop gushing. Any way you slice it, you can’t go wrong. If you haven’t experienced Food Heads yet, trust me, it might just set a new level of expectations for your noon-time noshing habits.

[…] Food Heads- Food Heads remains in my top 5 lunch spots and it’s been serving up fresh and unique sandwiches (a sandwich with sweet potatoes in it? You betcha!) for almost 20 years. Lasting impression? I think so. If you want to step slightly outside of the SXSW downtown hub, here’s an adorable house where you can get a serious (yet Austin-friendly) sandwich on freshly made breads- it’s always a treat. The sandwich pictured above is my favorite Salmon Salad sandwich, complete on multigrain bread and made with apples! I substitute the mayo for Dijon Vinaigrette for a tangy twist. […]
