Rollin', Rollin', Rollin'…

Some of you may be surprised to know that I don’t consider myself a food critic. I don’t even consider myself a food blogger, though I do happen to write about food frequently. The difference is, when I blog about food, I take the angle of highlighting why that recipe, restaurant, food festival is entertaining and what occassion I “Rebeccammend” it for…basically I write about all things FUN!

Fun is definitely the best way to describe my experience last night at the soft opening of Piranha Killer Sushi, an Arlington-based sushi chain that also has a location in Ft. Worth, and is Austin’s newest downtown sushi joint.  Today is the official opening to the public.

With cocktails such as the “Sexytini”, made with Raspberry Vodka, Pineapple, Champagne, and an edible orchid, how could you not be entertained from the start? The modest, yet clean, and refreshing square-like space houses a sushi bar in the center of the restaurant lined with seating where chefs diligently prepare roll after roll out in the open and diners can get a glimpse of kitchen action. There are two additional counters, one in front of the beverage bar, and one stand-alone, where you can fully dine and get the sushi bar experience if you want a quick bite instead of sitting at a table.

The creative rolls were flavorful, colorful, and beautifully plated. The rice was just the perfect consistency, soft and fresh, not taking away from the taste of the fish, vegetables, and garnish. The “Marry Me Roll”, which apparently has witnessed a few proposals in the restaurant, was topped with tuna and strawberries, and rolled with shrimp tempura and ginger cream–delicious! We also tried the “Dancing Eel Roll”, made with avocado, cream cheese, and smoked eel on top. The “Mixed Vegetable Roll” also came with fruit–mango, and was served in rice paper, much like a spring roll, then sliced and was swimming in a sweet, spicy sauce. If you visit Piranha with a group and share several things, you will find your meal very reasonably priced for the high quality dishes they serve up. Now that the doors are open, I “Rebeccammend” you walk right in a soak up the flavor and fun at Piranha Killer Sushi.

    Hey there,

Who let you know about the soft opening? I’d love to get in touch with Piranha’s PR people. Could you send me an email address?

    Thanks!
